TESTING THE IMPACT ON THE OTHER ARCHITECTURAL SCALESThis façade of varying intimacies developed at 1:25 was documented across the areas of the scheme that I identified by the means of diagrammatic analysis. In order to show this range of intimacies across varying scales, I undertook architectural drawings of plan section, elevation and isometric at a range of scales such as 1:50, 1:100, 1:200 and 1:500. This façade, while intimate and 1:25, had a different and less personal and tactile impact on each of these larger-scale drawings. However, when the façade is drawn in sequence across the building, it affords architectural qualities and consequences such as differing aesthetic qualities, façade geometry and series of spatial sequences all of which are a result of the thicker wall construction. These are important features of the scheme that can only be interpreted and reflected upon at these scales.

CIRCULATION SPACES
Using the methods described previously, an interesting design research project has begun to form. The drawings of the façade across a variety of scales in plan, section, elevation and axonometric created a rich series of drawings which can be studied in isolation and in totality as a tool for reflection in parallel with the reflective diary. The plan drawings , while highlighting wide range of intimacies for the inhabitants in the private dwellings, demonstrates little regard for the social intimacy between the residents as described by Dawn Trimble and architectural practitioners rather that architectural theorists such as Pallasmaa. This reflection allowed me to rework the façade design to incorporate circulation into the façade to incorporate another intimacy. This was drawn in plan at 1:250 and then by the means of elevation at 1:150 and subsequently, to a technical section at 1:25. The opportunity to utilise detailed scales beyond the often-used scale of 1:25 was appealing. 1:10 drawings of the circulation space within the façade and 1:2 drawings of the tactile elements such as the stairs and handrails were also carried out.

PROJECTED RESULTSThe projected results of this research will offer an interesting perspective on how to introduce a variety of intimacies to an existing architectural design at a detailed scale. The central hypothesis of this research project is as follows:
Introducing a new facade of balconies, bay windows and winter gardens that was developed at an intimate architectural scale across an entire architectural scheme – can help to enhance the intimate relationship the residents have with their homes. This architecture of intimacies relies upon an enhancement in views, lighting and privacy in the spaces created. This proposal has the capability to alter the building envelope, scale and form of the existing scheme at the various other architectural scales. |
